Anderson signed a two-year contract extension with the Panthers on Wednesday, Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Analysis: Anderson was headed for free agency in the 2016 offseason, but proved sufficiently serviceable in securing two victories against the Buccaneers last year to prompt the Panthers to once again retain him as veteran insurance. The 32-year-old enters his fifth season overall backing up Cam Newton, and is expected to only be called upon in case of injury to the team's franchise quarterback. Terms of the extension were not disclosed, but Jones reports that Anderson was set to earn $1.175 million in 2015 under the terms of his previous contract.

Pierre-Paul (hand) plans to return to Giants next week, ESPN's Dan Graziano reports.

Analysis: Without outlining a precise timetable, the report notes that Pierre-Paul expects to be able to play at some point early in the coming season. His on-field productivity (77 tackles and 12.5 sacks last season) make him an asset in IDP formats, but those without the flexibility to stash Pierre-Paul on fantasy rosters are advised to monitor his progress, with an eye toward a possible in-season add.

Smith (knee) is unlikely to see any action in Thursday's final preseason game, the 49ers' official website reports.

Analysis: Smith has been dealing with a minor knee contusion for the past couple of weeks, but he should be ready to go once the regular season begins. Thursday's likely absence is due to the nature of the final preseason game. Had this been a regular season game, Smith would be good to go. He will line up opposite Anquan Boldin this season as a starting wideout for his new club.

    • Johnson (calf/upper back) will miss the...

Johnson (calf/upper back) will miss the Panthers' preseason finale against the Steelers on Thursday Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Analysis: Johnson will have missed the entirety of the preseason a year after sitting out the Panthers' final three exhibition games in 2014 and subsequently getting off to a sluggish first month in the regular campaign that saw him held without a sack. The calf and upper back maladies responsible for Johnson's absence this year, both suffered in practice, currently leave his status for the team's Week 1 tilt against the Jaguars worth monitoring.

Brady is among the Patriots' starters not in line to see the field in Thursday's preseason finale against the Giants, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports.

Analysis: Brady's expected absence Thursday in a meaningless preseason game is hardly noteworthy on its own, but it takes on added relevance in the context of the team keeping him healthy for next Thursday's regular season opener against the Steelers, now that the quarterback's four-game suspension has been nullified.
